New Reduced Fare FAQ

Two women board a bus with fare cards in their hands

Starting October 1, CTtransit is expanding and simplifying reduced fares. Every reduced-fare category (seniors, customers with disabilities, youth and veterans) will be on the same 50% discount.

  • Youth customers (ages 5-18) see their discount go from 20% to 50%, verified with a student ID. For the first time, youth customers can buy 31-day passes.
  • Seniors (65+), veterans, and customers with disabilities will also enjoy the 50% discount.
  • The discount applies to Local service and CTfastrak only. It does not apply to Express service.

CTtransit is rolling the initiative out alongside the Connecticut Department of Transportation. It's part of a broader initiative to make transit more affordable and easier to use for people who need it most.

What does it cost?

Youth fares (ages 5-18)

  • What's changing for youth customers? Two things. The discount goes from 20% to 50% off. Youth customers can now buy 31-day passes, which weren't available to them before.
  • Does a child or teen between the ages of 5 and 18 need an ID or proof of age to get the discount? Yes. Youth customers show a student ID when boarding to get the discount. Sales outlets or Token Transit purchases do not require ID.
  • How much do the passes cost? A 10-Ride pass is $7.65 and a 31-Day pass is $30.60. A 2-hour fare is $0.85, and an All-Day fare is $1.70. See the pricing table above.
  • Where can individuals buy the passes? 10-Ride and 31-Day passes are available as prepaid paper passes or in the mobile app (Token Transit or the Transit app). 2-hour and All-Day fares can be bought on board or in the mobile app.
  • Does this change anything for a 19-year-old or a college student? No. The discount applies to ages 5 through 18 specifically. Anyone older pays the regular adult fare unless they qualify under a different discount (senior, disability, or U-Pass).
